Frequently Asked Questions

An entrance door must be released during a current failure. Which electric door strike can be used?

Electric door strikes with fail-unlocked operation (e.g. Models 36 water-resistant, 37, 342, 343, 138etc.) are unlocked during a current failure. To lock the door, the electric door strike must be energized. If the current is switched off or interrupted due to a current failure, the electric door strike is unlocked. For technical reasons, only operation with direct current is possible. Important: Electrical locking mechanisms of doors in escape routes must meet extensive requirements that can only be fulfilled by systems that have been specially developed for this purpose.

How to determine whether DIN left or right ?

Rule of thumb for DIN table: The door is viewed from the side on which the door hinges are visible. This is the side to which the door is opened. Door hinges on the left = DIN left, door hinges on the right = DIN right. For angled striking plates, the DIN indication is required.

How to ensure permanent access to a door via a timer or switch?

The suffix eE denotes permanently energizable electric door strikes. In order to prevent the typical snapping noise that accompanies door strikes, they are permanently energized with direct current. If the intercom system with audible snapping noise is to be combined with noiseless permanent unlocking, the changeover device Model 7410-10 can be used. 8 V eE, 12 V eE and 24 V eE versions are also available.

How to prevent unauthorized use of doors in escape routes?

With escape route locking mechanisms that may bear proof of suitability of an approval body, such doors may be electrically locked. effeff also offers a wide range of locking components (holding magnets and special escape door strikes) as well as control units and door terminals with integrated emergency switches. The latest addition to the range is compact control terminals that provide maximum functionality at low installation cost. Commissioning as well as the mandatory annual inspection must be carried out by „competent, skilled personnel".

Malfunction of holding function or monitoring?

In order for the holding function or monitoring to function correctly, the latch bolt must engage min. 9 mm (electric door strike with 5 mm Fafix adjustment). If the depth of engagement of the latch bolt is less, the arrester pin or the slide is not pressed in fully and the monitoring function is not guaranteed. The microswitch is not activated and the arrester pin cannot hold.

The door to doctors’ surgeries or lawyers’ offices should not remain open, however it should open automatically during visiting hours by activating the bell button.

This can be realized by using an automatic door strike control Model 750. The visitor rings the bell and thus triggers time-delayed the door strike when automatic mode is activated. This means that not only the waiting time until the electric door strike is triggered but also the time required to energize the door strike can be set. If the control is deactivated, the door strike functions as normal.

The electric door strike only releases when the door is pressed into the door seal away from the direction of opening.

If the doors are equipped with a door seal, a side load can be expected on the keeper due to the restoring force on the door leaf. This side load prevents the latch bolt of door strikes that are unlocked with direct current from being securely unlocked and thus affects the opening function of the door strike. With this type of door, the door strike must be energized with alternating current with the result that a standard door strike can unlock with a side load on the latch bolt of max. 80 N.

What causes the snapping noise of an electric door strike and how can it be prevented?

Every fail-locked door strike causes the snapping noise typical to door strikes that are energized with alternating current. This snapping noise is generally desired due to its signalling effect. The loudness of the snapping noise is usually at the bottom limit of the admissible rated voltage range. Depending on the structural conditions of the building, this snapping noise may be disturbing and can only be reduced to a certain degree at the point where it occurs. The profile chambers of door constructions comprising tubular profiles e.g. can be filled with foam insulation. The door strike can also be actuated with direct current although the signal is then no longer effective and a possible side load on the latch bolt may affect the opening function.

What does 1.9 or 01.09 refer to on the inscription plate of an effeff product?

These numbers refer to the production date. On inscription plates with a barcode, the number in front of the point stands for the month and the number behind the point for the year, e.g. 01.09 stands for January 2009. The first number of inscription plates without a barcode refers to the quarter and the second number to the year. Our example (1.9) stands for the 1st quarter 2009.

Which door strike may be installed in fire-rated doors?

Test certificates of the Material Testing Institute of North Rhine Westfalia are available for the model series 131, 142U, 143 and 118F . This door strike may only be installed during production of the fire-rated door. Subsequent installation results in loss of approval. Please observe the information provided by the Institute for Construction Technology.

Which door strikes are suitable for bevelled door rebates?

Door strikes with a bevelled flat or flanged striking plate are required when the face of the door leaf is bevelled. The face plate of the electric door strike is always bevelled on the hinged side. The door and bevelled face plate are identified by numbers that denote the corresponding bevel in mm, based on a door with a 45 mm thick door leaf. With other door thicknesses, the degree of the door bevel at the door must be deducted and then added to the bevel number.

Which door strikes can be used in conjunction with an access control?

With electronic devices, e.g. door code systems, the electronics must be protected against electrical disturbing pulses. We recommend therefore, using special door strikes with an integrated recovery diode. The suffix of this order reference number is 05. These door strikes can only be operated with direct current according to the rated voltage. In order to achieve adequate security and functionality in conjunction with an access control system, we recommend using door strikes with monitoring contacts (RR) for most systems.

Which door strikes may be used in smoke protection doors?

Our 118S and 111U door strike series. This series received approval by the Material Testing Institute for smoke protection doors.

Which door strikes require compensation of installation tolerances?

There are two possibilities that cannot be combined with one another: 1. The Fix-adjustment enables the door strike to be moved horizontally within the 4 mm oblong holes in the striking plate. A combination with angular striking plates and lock bolt guide is not possible. 2. When using the Fafix adjustment, adjustment is possible by shifting the surface-mounted attachment on the keeper 3 mm. Further adjustment can be made by using different surface-mounted attachments so that the engagement of the latch bolt is shifted to the inside or outside to compensate for misalignment.

Which electric door strike is locked during a current failure?

Electric door strikes with fail-locked operation (e.g. Models 118, 116, 16 water-resistant, 142U, 143 etc.) are locked during a current failure. The door can only be opened as long as the electric door strike is energized. If alternating current is being used, a typical snapping noise can be heard that is omitted with direct current. The electric door strike is always designed for a momentary contact which is the case when the door is released by a door release pushbutton.

Which electric door strike only requires a current pulse to remain locked until the door is opened?

Electric door strike with holding function (e.g. Models 26 water-resistant, 27, 128, 126 etc.). When the door strike is energized and the door closed, the arrester pin in the middle of the keeper is pressed in. The door strike remains unlocked until the arrester pin extends fully when the door is opened.

Which electric doors strikes allow evaluation of the door position?

Electric door strikes that have the suffix RR in the model reference have an integrated changeover contact that detects when the latch bolt is engaged and the door either „open“ or „closed“. The contact is potential-free and is suitable for a switching voltage of 25 V and a switching current of 1 A.

Which suffix must be added to the order number if a lever is required for the mechanical unlocking of the electric door strikes?

The suffix "E” denotes the mechanical permanent unlocking function. This additional function is only possible with fail-locked strikes with the exception of security strikes. Instead of the unlocking lever an adjusting screw is used with water-resistant door strikes or strikes for swing doors. Equipping the door with an additional door closer prevents the door from staying open if it has been forced open by a gust of wind or differences in air pressure.
